Midwives need your support
The ‘continuity of midwifery care’ we have in New Zealand is recommended by the World Health Organization as the best way for pregnant women to receive their maternity care.
However, neglect by successive governments has meant the pay and working conditions for the community-based midwives who offer this care have been eroded, yet their role has become more complex. Their pay does not reflect the work that they do and the support they receive is inadequate.
For more than four years the College of Midwives has been negotiating with the Ministry of Health to achieve ‘fair and reasonable’ pay for community-based midwives and it is critical that we resolve this.
We urgently need your help to encourage politicians to prioritise maternity care by putting in place an updated funding arrangement that pays community midwives fairly.
Please support our message by signing our petition and sending a digital postcard to the Minister of Health. New Zealand women, babies and whānau will thank you for it.
